I cannot update ipad ios 4.2 (8c134) to ios 5.

I have done all the suggestions, nothing is working for me. I have erased all contedt and settings. Plugged into itunes, tried checking for new software(says it is up to date) tried restore and back up. Just keeps telling me there was a problem downloading the software for Ipad and pop up box re-directs me to all the suggestions I have already tried. My mac software and itunes are up to date. i have restarted both computer and ipad. Still, no dice.

Try checking for an update to iTunes on your computer. The latest version of iTunes is iTunes 11 and that is required for iOS 6.1.3

An original iPad can be updated to iOS 5.1.1 while the iPad 2 and later iPads update to iOS 6.1.3.

I understand it should only updated to 5.1.1. I have the latest version of ITunes. Still nothing is working.

I have tried setting up as a New Ipad also. Message:This version of the iPad software (4.2) is the current version. Then trying to restore: There was a problem downloading the software for the iPad. The requested resource was not found.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.

Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

You are probably running a very outdated version of iTunes. The latest is available at http://apple.com/itunes/download/.
