iCloud requires at least Mac OS X 10.7. Mac OS 10.6.x supported MobileMe which has been discontinued.
This hint from the Mac OS X Hints website may be of help with that: 10.6: Add iCloud Calendar in iCal - Mac OS X Hints. No guarantee. Your best bet would be to upgrade your system to Mt. Lion so you can use the full capability of iCloud.

Thanks Old Toad
I had tried the solution at the Wilmut website and it does work in one direction (iCloud to iCal) but not the other
I may need to give in to the traditional Apple planned obsolesence and upgrade!!
You can have iCloud Calendar and Contacts functionality on Snow Leopard if you want, but not for free 😟
Download a trial copy of SoHo Organizer, it is an iCloud client and it runs on 10.5 to 10.8. It is $99 and it is very good.

This worked for me, and changes go both directions.
