How do I get my macbook and iPhone 4S to sync iMessages?

I recently got a new macbook pro, and using my time capsule added my old user to the macbook. Everything works absolutely perfectly except the iMessages no longer sync between my iPhone 4S and my Macbook. Both have the phone number as the ID. The phone number was already there for iMessage from the back-up. It also sent me a message on my phone saying that the Macbook was using the number for iMessage. However I can only send messages from my iphone, my laptop will not send or receive any imessages through the number.
