Reinstall standard fonts?

I have a brand-new Macbook Air with Mountain Lion. The fonts had a lot of "duplicate font" errors, so I clicked "Restore Standard Fonts" and was told that missing fonts could be restored by reinstalling the OS. A) Is that true? B) How do I do that without losing all the user data on the machine?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

Reinstalling OS X will only replace system files and not touch your user data, installed applications, and accounts. However, do be sure to back up before doing this, just in case.
