Why doesn't my SD card slot work on my macbook pro (early 2011)?

My SD slot doesn't seem to work 90% of the time. That means 1 out of 10 times I put the same card into the slot it works and the other 9 times it doesn't work. That seems to hold true with different cards too...I have 5 SD cards. All of them are SDHC ranging from 8GB-32GB. They are primarily for my cameras and video cameras. Apple.com says my card slot will read SDHC cards ranging in size from 4GB-32GB. So why won't it work most of the time with most of my cards? Help please!!!!

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

Again, waking up an old thread:

I first used an air compressor, set around 50psi, to "air out" all the ports.

Then I used a clean cloth to dab a bit of alcohol on an SD card's contacts... slid it in and out several times, dabbing a little more alchol each time... and voila!

All of our SD cards now seem to work fine... recognize, read, eject...

Also used alcohol to clean the contacts on all the cards.
