what is the difference between a delegate and a subscription?

I have imported a google calendar into my iCal and i have subscribe to others so they can view my calendar and I can see theres, in iCal it shows my subscriptions as well as it has created delegates for all of my subscrptions so I have them listed in my delegates and Subscriptions columns. What is the difference between the two?
