how do i boot in recovery mode

how do i boot in recovery mode. was watchin cartoon in itunes, went to frame by frame. i restarted, cant get past grey screen with apple logo and gear

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

Recovery mode: hold down command-r while starting up.
