my new ipod touch 5th gen not recognised on my itunes browser have just downloaded the latest itunes

have just purched a new 5th gen ipod toch but my pc does not recongnise it when I open my itunes browser. I have downloaded the latest version of itunes as recomended but still not seeing my ipod.

I have followed the instructions on the apple support site and followed the instructions to the letter, the only trouble is the instructions are for the previous itunes version so how the **** can I troubleshoot when the instructions are for the wrong version of itunes.......
