Printing to a networked HP printer hangs

We've got a mixed PC and Mac network at work, and we have shared HP printers (an Officejet Pro 8600 and an 8500). I can see the printers, and I can actually print test sheets from the printer utility. But when I try to print a document, it hangs someplace during the printing process.

I've deleted the printer queue, and deleted and re-added the printers to no avail.

On occasion, they magically work.

Can somebody please advise me what to do next?

Thanks,

Carlisle

I started a new thread on the same issue as I could see this one was not getting resolved. I have lots more detail about what I have tried and nothing works so far. All Windows PCs on this home network print correctly. The two Macs can't print anything. However, installing the HP print utilities lets them print the test page, and scanning works fine, so there is no obvious network issue. OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus, problem apparently since a Mac OS update a few weeks ago. The Macbook on the network prints fine to an OfficeJet Pro 8620 on a different network, so it does seem to be an issue with the recognition of this particular model. I have to say that I now have what seems to be exactly the same problem, also on an OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus. However, printing to the IP address does not fix it. Yes, it works perfectly with all Windows PCs connected to the same small network. Yes multicasting is on at the router. Yes, it used to print fine up until about a week ago. I had only been using AirPrint and tried downloading and installing the HP installer. I can see the printer and the ink levels, but all printjobs either stop at "1% complete" or just disappear. I have followed the Apple support instructions about removing all printers, and the instructions about deleting everything from the printer folder and starting again from scratch. Nothing works. All advice welcome.

I am having the exact same issues with an HP 8600. It used to work fine, then suddenly it gets stuck after saying printing is 100% complete. The job stays in the queue and nothing gets printed. The problem happens on multiple Macs, and started at the same time, suggesting that the problem is not associated with software on a particular Mac. I tried restarting the router, re-installing the printer on the network, and various other troubleshooting. Nothing has worked. I installed the printer on a PC. In the installation on the PC it said it couldn't find the printer in the normal way and asked for the printer's IP address. Once I added that, I can print from the PC just fine. (BTW in case it's not clear, the printer is connected via wifi, there is no wired connection.) As suggested above I also installed the Bonjour software on the PC as a test. The Bonjour SW does not see the printer.

Any ideas for how I can get back to being able to print from a Mac?

As you suggested, I also installed the Bonjour software on the PC as a test. The Bonjour SW does not see the printer. Does that give an indication of what the problem might be, and what I can try next?

Thank you.

Hi Shane,

Thanks for the help.

Both printers are networked wirelessly.

I'm not sure about whether the 8500 is an A909 or A910; it is at another site but will be moving here when we consolidate in a few weeks.

The test sheet printing has actually taken place only on the 8600 so far--I haven't been up to the other office yet to see if I can do the same there.

The printer here is giving me a "low ink" warning, though it isn't out yet. I'm not sure if that is part of the issue.

The printer connects, claims it is printing the page, claiming it is somewhere between 12 and 100% complete, but nothing happens.

Thanks again,

Carlisle

Hardware checks out, and it's not doing it from Windows PC's on the same network. That narrows it down to the drivers on the Mac being the cause of the problem or AirPrint depending on which you are using. Did you have the Mac get the printer's driver from Apple Software Updates, or did you use the built in AirPrint driver to connect them?

Actually AirPrint is something that's built into OS X 10.7 and up. It's actually an Apple invention that's meant to streamline the install process. To use AirPrint, bring up Print and Fax. Click the + sign to add a printer. Next to Use there will be a drop down box. Click the drop down and select AirPrint. Click Add to add the new printer cue to the list. See if it will print now. Let me know what happens.

Download the app below on the Windows computer and see if it can find the printer using Bonjour services. This will let you know if the router is able to use the service or not. If the utility comes back and says it can't find a printer, then Bonjour is either turned off or the router doesn't support it. This may be causing the connection to fail when print jobs are sent. Let me know what happens.
