mouse and pad sticky

I am finding a number of the gestures on my wireless mouse and trackpad very temperamental : sometimes they produce the desired result, and often nothing happens at all.

They and the desktop are new. Does anyone have suggestions what the problem may be and, better still, able to offer solutions ?
