Cannot connect to server with Gmail setup as Exchange account

I cannot get my gmail account setup as an exchange account of my new iPad after upgrading to iOS 6.1.3. I have tried to restore from iCloud backup where it was working only my previous iPad and completely wipe and setup as new iPad. I get the same error each time:

The account is added and credentials validated (check marks appear) but when I go to Mail there's only and inbox and I get an error that it cannot connect to server. I've tried this 5+ times now and done what people suggested in other posts, nothing works.

Is is a glitch in new iOS build? Strangely, I am running same version of iOS on my iPhone 5 and gmail via exchange works just fine. Super frustrating as connecting my gmail as a gmail account doesn't sync contacts (major feature oversight here!) to the device, just colander and mail.

Please help :)

Yes of course I would agree that the vast majority of people are not using exchange / push with their gmail and iPhone. I should have included a qualifier of something like "the non-IT user that had push set up for their gmail by a friend or colleage, or researched it". I figured it was implied that the "average user" I referred to was someone that was already using push with their gmail, which probably disqualifies them as average.

Anyway, regardless, I would bet there will be thousands frustrated, if you want to argue about who is average or not that is another point haha 🙂, but I admit it wasn't the best choice of words.

Thanks for the luck! Best of luck back ô¿ô

Thank you for the validation! Haha, see that OP! 😉

I know it's driving people crazy.

Is there a way to upgrade a gmail account so that it can use this functionality again? Only paid google apps accounts would be lame, what if a gmail user wants to do it, not even an option to pay?

They just want us to use their gmail app for iOS!

The only reason you need an exchange account is sync with contacts and calendar. It was not supported earlier by default with standard gmail settings, but now it is fully supported.

Please, delete your gmail exchange settings and add regular (standard for iOS) gmail account. Everything works perfectly. You can sync your contacts and calendars, and get push notifications by default.

The standard Gmail profile in iOS 7 does not support Push, which is the primary reason most people went the Exchange route, not for Calendar and Contacts support (Gmail Calendar was always standard in iOS, and Contacts were a nice benefit of Exchange but there was always CardDAV for that otherwise).

While it is correct that iOS 7 now supports Gmail Contacts, it does not support Push. For that you need Exchange (if it was set up prior to Google pulling the plug, or if you have a paid Google account) or you use the Gmail app for Push support.

Besides, you're replying to a post that is 8 months old, I'm sure they've moved along with a solution by now ...

that's not the only reason you need to use exchange for Gmail. another great reason is for you to not want to download what –in my case– are almost 10.000 emails down to your iphone. yhrough exchange you can choose how many of these emails you actually want to download to your phone.

combine wuth IOS7 taking away your control of how much emails you want to download to your phone, this would have come in very handy!

imagine using a 16GB iphone like me; you already loose almost 2.77GB just for IOS7. then you loose 1,11GB to what they call "documents and settings" (which they do not specify). then you loose 1.75GB for somthing called "others" (which they DEFINITELY do not specify) and then, in my case, you loose 7+ or more GB for emails. that leaves you with a little more than 3GB on a 16GB phone!!!

this is the first time in my life i am SERIOUSLY considering going android. to deny any user this simplistic control is just simply mean. they already "forced" me into buying a VERY EXPENISVE storage plan on iCloud in order to continue receiving emails(!!!). and now they are trying to force me to a) change my habits; or b) buy a phone with more storage.

no. i do not want to change my habits. i will NOT delete any emails i've read. i might need them in the future.

VERY frustrating.

you are right about the storage plan. but remember that my main problem is, that o cannot control the amount of emails i download to my iphone. this is in part IOS7's fault in not giving me access to this feature that was only discontinued on IOS7 (which is another topic, i know) but also because i cannot setup my Gmail over Exchange. because even if i couldn't control that on iCloud i would still be able to set something similar up over exchange.

iOS 7 does not take up 2.77 GB, not even close. If you've ever restored your iPhone without loading a backup, i.e. getting back to out-of-the-box state, you'd see that you have your full capacity, minus a few hundred MB of Other (which may or may not be iOS). What you could be confused about, which is common, is that 16 GB is never really 16 GB due to how storage space is advertised vs. how it is actually counted. At best, for a 16 GB iPhone you'll have "only" 14.9 GB of actual storage, which applies to any storage medium not just iPhone.

then you loose 1,11GB to what they call "documents and settings" (which they do not specify).

There is no "documents and settings" catagory that I can see, but there is a "Documents and Data" category under iCloud usage (but that's iCloud and obviously not the storage on your iPhone) and also under the breakdown by app when you select it under Settings/General/Usage. Shouldn't be a mystery as to what's taking up space or why.

then you loose 1.75GB for somthing called "others" (which they DEFINITELY do not specify)

You're right in that Other is not specified, but that's because it can be a huge variety of things ranging from song artwork, media saved in text messages, corrupted synchronization to iTunes -- many possible things. Having 1.75 GB of Other is a bit high but not unusual, and you can try reducing it by restoring the device and re-loading content (with or without your backup).

and then, in my case, you loose 7+ or more GB for emails. that leaves you with a little more than 3GB on a 16GB phone!!!

Your Gmail will only take up as much space as the attachments you download within each message ... just having the messages in your Inbox does not occupy much space. More space is taken only when you choose to download an attachment in a message. I have 7 years worth of Gmail in my Inbox, and according to my iPhone the Mail app is taking up 84 MB of space. I have hundreds of emails with photos, movies, etc., but I don't need to download each attachment, just the ones I feel I need to see on my iPhone.

So it should be no problem holding 10,000 emails on your iPhone, just don't download every single attachment in your Inbox.

Saying that is similar to saying "I have 12GB of photos and videos leaving less than 4GB on a 16GB phone"

I've had every model iphone since the 3GS, backed up and restored along the way and it has accumulated alot of data. If you don't want to delete emails, messages, photos etc, you should probably upgrade to the 32GB or 64GB version.
