My Macbook 1.83 Ghz has very low volume and I'm unable to raise it to what I would consider an acceptable level. Turning up the volume in the sound preferences or by using the slider in the menu bar does me no good. Even at 95% it just isn't loud enough.
All laptop speakers that I've ever heard sound "low", I've just accepted it. It's not any worse than other notebooks I've used... it's pretty on par with what I think is normal, and acceptable.
Yes I find mine to be a little soft as well...but I can hear it pretty well in a very quiet room...are there any software hacks out there that can increase the volume on these puppies....like how you can increase the decibles in the equalizer in iTunes.
The volume on my MacBook is ridiculously low, even with all sliders maxed, as well. It's obviously not an isolated issue considering the volume of replies concerning this topic and similar ones. Even accounting for the reduced volume with other laptops, my previous iBooks were much louder in comparison. I actually can barely hear this with the television or music on at a normal level in the same room. Unacceptable...
If this is happening mainly in iTunes, then try unchecking the soundcheck feature under preferences->playback (this worked for me). If it's a global problem, then I would have it looked at.
Mine are too quiet as well and I'm thinking this may have been a design decision by Apple since the volume is perfectly fine when using headphones. On a positive note, the speakers have a very nice sound ( the speakers on my wife's HP laptop distort like crazy ).
My macbook's speakers are sometimes good, but sometimes I can't hear them at all. When I have it at my house, i usually hook it into an amplifier sort of thing(Boom Cube) I was trying to watch a DVD, and barely any sound came out.
When I first got the MacBook, it seemed to have plenty of speaker volume, but after an episode when it got very hot, the speaker volume dropped dramatically to the point where the speakers are virtually useless. The headphone jack seems OK, though.
I know some MacBooks are having trouble with slowing down when the heat up; maybe that is related to the speaker volume problem.
I'll be getting a macbook soon. I'm used to a desktop so I'll just plug in my old speakers. That should be fine for me since the headphone jack apparently is fine and it'll mostly be sitting in my dorm when I listen to music or watch movies
a lot of this has to do with the source, some songs or DVD's have a starting low volume, there isnt a way to increase the volume, and i dont know that you would want to, any bit above the max volume greatly increases the chances of blowing the speakers, which would greatly affect the experience with the sound in a negative way, the best thing to do is throw on some headphones or some external speakers. ive had laptops a long time now, and ive come to terms with quiet speakers, i think that the macbooks are a bit louder than many other notebooks ive had. Im inpressed with the amount of feature crammed into the 1.08 in laptop, i feel that an arguably low speaker quality is greatly offset by many other features.
