'Other' is everything that does not fit into the few categories like photos, music, videos...all copies of documents, emails, attachements, cache files from browsing, system files, and so on. Some of htat may clear if you do a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, ignore the red slider if it appears.

Low memory warnings, and things of that nature can result from material building up and a reboot releases some of that stuff.

An "other" that large usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files. Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

To restore from backup see:

iOS: How to back up

To restore to factory settings/new iPod see:

iTunes: Restoring iOS software

Normally the "other" is less than 1 1/2 GB. It consists of items that do not fit the specific categories listed. It includes music artwork, mail, messages
