Java control panel says I'm up to date, but Safari says not?

I am running OS X 10.7.5 and Java 7 update 6.

Safari tells me that I need to update to a more secure version.

The latest is 7 update 17.

However the Java Control Panel is set to auto-update, and says that I am up-to-date with release 6.

So it doesn't give me an update option.

What is going on?

Thanks for any info

Launch the Terminal app in /Applications/Utilities/, copy & paste this one-liner into the window that pops up, and hit the return key:

sudo /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java -version

enter your admin password at the Password: prompt and hit the return key. You should see this:

java version "1.7.0_17"

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_17-b02)

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.7-b01, mixed mode)

Java control panel says I'm up to date, but Safari says not?
