Scan the snaps. Make sure you use an RGB colour profile - regardless of whether the images are colour or B&W. Scan to a folder on the desktop. Once you've completed the scans import the contents of the folder.

Is this process done with my iMac or should I have a separate "scanner?"
Well you need a Scanner, which is a separate piece of hardware. That will come with software that you install.
Look for a scanner that can scan several items at a time and save each photo to its own file. My Canon 8600F has that capability. Canon currently has two models, 5600F and 9600F, that can do multiple scans. Both can scan both photos and slides/negatives.
Other top scanners have a similar feature.
