My iPod nano 2GB only brings up a white screen with no words. I tried to hold down the center to reset it but that didn't work....any ideas?

My iPod nano 2GB only brings up a white screen with no words. I tried to reset it by holding down the center (silver) for 8 seconds but this doesn't work. Some times I can't even get the white screen it is just dark but it will still play music I just can't see anything to make a selection.
