i've restored my backup but it didn't bring my music/apps over, any help?

I backed up my ipod and then re-stored the backup but it did not restore my music or apps. i can't see them. does anyone know if music/apps get backed up? have I done something wrong? any suggestions?
iPod touch (4th generation), iOS 6.1.3
