Questions about connecting a monitor to a Macbook.

I've got some questions about connecting an external monitor to my Macbook (with mini display port adapter). Basically, the problem i'm having is that when I use logic pro, it's all a bit squished together on my 13 inch screen meaning it's fairly tricky to see everything. I thought it would be a good idea to connect it to my TV which has a VGA port. Now the question I have is, if I connect my macbook to this 24" screen, surely it will just copy my screen across, therefor it will still be just as clustered, but scaled up? Or is there a way to make the second screen act like a proper monitor and make logic bigger so it is a lot more spaced out? Just to confirm, i'm going to be using it as a primary monitor, as opposed to a secondary display.

Thanks,

Fergus
