Photo Shop "Not Enough Memory (RAM)

I have been using Photo Shop for years but recently I have tried to save a file as a Jpeg.

It runs through all the screens and starts the saving process and this window pops up.

I have 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM of RAM.

I opened the activity monitor and it some times shows 2GB+ of RAM available but quickly drains to nothing during this process.

Also when I close all programs except for the Activity Monitor it doesn't show much more than 2.5 GB of RAM.

Ideas?

Also I thought of the idea of getting more RAM but 4GB should be enough and I haven't had much luck with finding RAM for my computer.

I have also had some issue with Memory when using iMovie. After working on a movie and then trying to save it as an image it pops us a window saying no memory. I can usually close the program and reopen it and things work.

Photoshop is telling you the truth, you need more RAM - Photoshop is a glutton for it and 4gb of RAM is just about enough for basic use with MLion. Photoshop will really stretch it.

Best places to buy are OWC (Macsales) or Crucial - buy as much as your wallet will stand 🙂:

Edit: I linked to the iMac RAM pages, but I see you have a Mac Pro (this is the Intel iMac forum), so navigate to the right page if you decide to upgrade.

No.

4 GBs of RAM is not nearly enough RAM for Photoshop.

OS X, by itself, likes to see and use between 2-4 GBs of RAM, alone!

Every Intel iteration of OS X uses more CPU,GPU, RAM and hard drive resources.

You simply have no operating room for Photoshop.

Photoshop takes a large initial chunk of RAM when you first launch it. When you actually open a image to work on, Photoshop can and does increase the initial image size to 3-4 times its original data size and allocates additonal RAM resources to compensate, too!

Purchase correct and reliable Mac RAM from online Mac RAM source OWC (macsales.com)

Good Luck!

Check out the sites I linked to for your particular Mac (Apple Menu>About this Mac will tell you what Mac you have) and see how much RAM your Mac will take. And get as much as you're happy to pay for.

Edit: You can keep the RAM you have, just add extra to the vacant slots. So long as all the RAM meets the specs for your Mac.

So I purchased more memory. I now have 12GB of RAM. The same issue is happening. Everytime I click Save As and try to save as a JPEG it goes through the process then errors out. In the JPEG Options if I do a save as Jpeg Baseline Standard it works but not if I do the BaselineOptimized or Progressive scan.
