I have an iphone 4S - and am trying to download photos to my pc (windows 7 -64bit).
I have also downloaded itunes.
When I plug my phone into my pc - it shows up in itunes - but it does NOT show up in my devices.
There is NO pop-up asking whether I want to import or view pictures.
How can I transfer photos to my pc??
Any help is appreciated.

What happens if you connect the phone and go to Computer? Does the phone appear there? If so, then right click on the device and you will see the choice Import and you will be able to import the photos.
Start by opening itunes, then going up to "view" in the top menu bar, and select "show sidebar".

I import my photos from my iphone with iPhoto. It will detect your phone when you plug it in. Just click on it and it will display all your photos for you. Then you can import it that way. All you gotta do after is move them out of your temp folder when it's done importing.
I have enabled the Menu bar in itunes -- but phone is still syncing everytime I plug it in.
Where do I get iphoto? My computer is not showing the iphone plugged in?? No pop-up window.

In iTunes on the menu bar go to Edit>Preferences>Devices
And tick "Prevent iPods etc from syncing automatically"
I have done as you suggested above - I ticked "prevent ipods,etc from syncing automatically" - My iphone 4S is still NOT showing up in My computer.
I have enabled AUTO PLAY for my iphone. Still it does NOT show up in D drive or in my computer anywhere...

Try disconnecting the USB to your phone and reconnect. After afew seconds the phone should beep to let you know its connected.
Go to Computer on your PC and you should see it under "Portable Devices" (You may need to scroll down to see it).
I followed your suggestions - and now I see Apple iPhone in "Devices and Printers" -- BUT, there is a Yellow Exclamation Mark! beside it.
What is the next step?

An exclamation mark usually means that the driver is missing or needs updating.
Yes - there is a rectangle icon "Apple Mobile Device usb driver" and another rectangle icon "Apple Iphone" - WITH a yellow exclamation mark beside it. When I troubleshoot the icon , it says "there is a problem with the driver for apple iphone. Reinstalling the driver might fix this problem"
Is it okay to go ahead and do this? Will this affect my iphone?

The driver is for your PC only. Nothing will happen to your phone.
Did you try starting whatever image capture or camera software you have on your pc? This should see the phone and allow you to import photos from the Camera Roll.
Okay - the driver update worked! thank-you. Can you please guide me as to how I import the 300 pictures on my camera roll and there are 400 pictures in my photo stream. Thanks for your tech guidance.
OK - In devices and printers - right click the phone and select "Browse"
Then keep double clicking the folder names and eventually you will see the pictures.
Just COPY them to a folder of your choice on your PC.
If you MOVE them the pictures will be deleted from your phone after they are moved.
The only pictures you can see with this method are from your "Camera Roll"

as per above, I was able to get into camera roll - so I just selected all, copied and pasted into folder on my pc.
Can you advise me as to how I can get the photos in "photostream" from my phone to my pc?
Also - is there a way to get the videos from my iphone 4s to my pc?
And, if I put the "sync" back on in itunes - what does it sync/back-up? does it include all photos, emails, text messages, apps??
I also noticed that there is only 6.0 GB FREE of 13.5 GB on my phone. Is this all the pictures taking up space? As I have less than 10 apps on my phone?
