is there a global dictionary either in TenFourFox browser OR in the 10.4 Tiger OS??
I have a few words that will not correct I think I may have added them to (some) dictionary
but spell check works in word for instance but not on the browsers - at least not tenfourfox.
G5 Power Mac, Mac OS X (10.4.11), 2x 2.6Ghz DCPs, 8GB Ram, 4+TB storage Acer X243W
Will try to check tomorrow, I believe TFF/FF/SM uses it's own dictionary.
If you post to the apple forums, you get jive . Jive disables apple's spell checker in the plain text input screen. You get apple's spell checker in html mode.

not so sure I follow this but regardless of apple forum or other sites, there are some words that are always left spelled incorrectly like "beacuse" will not get corrected

I use tenfourfox and I get this. [ I'm editing this forum page in HTML. ]
for instance I can spell it like this "becuase" in facebook and I get no red line under it
and here it is in google apps mail that I use all the time you can see I get red lines under some spelling but not others.

Could you have added becuase to your personal dictionary?
yes no doubt I added it by mistake instead of correcting it you know but I can't find where to fix that. don't know if its a system wide dictionary or something in TFF?

BD, could not find that so I used spotlight to find "persdict.dat" - modified that in word, saved the misspelled "becuase" -- didn't work
I dont know that Word wouldn't mung it up.
I would not trust spotlight to find the correct file. Spotlight found 13 copies of persdict.dat where as Find Any File found three. You need to verify the path:
Here is the path. Note: mac is my short user name. Yours will be different. Start in you home folder. Then find the Library folder. Continue.
MS Word will not let me edit persdict.dat
You need to use TextEdit. Look in the applications folder.
I have found that spotlight is inconsistent in Tiger when searching by filename. To search by filename, try:
FindAnyFile
"This is a free program for Mac OS 10.4 and later that lets you search for files on your disks, primarily on HFS formatted ones." FindAnyFile allows you to search for all files on your harddrive. Do the search from an administrator account. Hold down the option key then click on return.
rc, I DL'ed the app thanks. opened the file in text edit but the word "because" was spelled correctly there so I guess word worked for me but it still does not get the red line under it when misspelled.
Three ideas:
1) rename the file & see what happens.
2) Try from another id.
3) search all files and see which ones contain the miss spelling.
try spotlight & see what it finds.
copy & paste the find command to the terminal. Slow but sure.
Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
# press return to run the command.
find -x ~ -type f -exec grep -il "becuase" {} \;
try easy fine. Search for imbeded text. It will be slow too.

Create new Account
blue apple > system preferences
clicks on accounts icon
click on lock icon if locked.
enter logon password
click on + icon ( left side of screen just above the lock icon )
after creating new account, you need to logout of your current account.
blue apple > log out ... current count name ...
log on to new account. see if problem goes away.
if it has gone away, some preference file got messed up on your account. Rename the appropriate Preference file. You will have to figure out the name. They are .plist files. Look for these files in Preferences folder which is in your Library folder [ more formally ~/Library/Preferences ]. ... reboot.
