GUC232A USB serial adapter and binary data

I am using a IOGear GUC232A USB to serial adapter on a MacBookPro (10.8.3). Most of the time it works fine. However, recently, I started trying to capture serial data from a device that communicates using binary data. I have tried using several different programs to capture the communication to a file like:

- Minicom (installed via mac ports)

- ZTerm

- screen

- a series of terminal commands

stty and cat to a file

has anyone experienced receiving binary data causing the keyboard and mouse (bluetooth) to stop working? I assume something happens to the usb and that kills everything. The machine itself is still running but I have no way of intereacing with it so the only thing I can do is force a power down.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
