how to do photo stream? Plus more questions...?

im getting the new 5th gen ipod and i have the 4th gen now and i dont want to loose all 2,000 of my photos.....i added and saved them onto photo stream. It says keep and shared by me. So does that mean when i get my new ipod will i still have all my photos? How do i transfer them onto my old ipod to my new one?
