Using target disk computer

I'm using a G4 as a target disk for a new Mac Mini. The G4 is in target disk mode but the icon for the disk is not showing up on the desktop of the Mini. It's connected with a Firewire adapter cable using the old Firewire port on the G4 with the updated port on the Mini.

If you go to Finder>Preferences is the box checked to show it on the desktop? (external HD checked)

Are you sure the FW ports work on both devices?
