Did all content of iPad 3 get backed up to iTunes

Fellow Members,

I finally found out where the Sidebar was hidden on iTunes 11.

I have now backed up iTunes to my PC.

To make sure a successfull backup was done to the PC, I go to:

Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

At this point I see a Folder that says:

d64fe180273dded30aa44270c73cb84c2ff9

Date Modified 4/7/2013

File Folder

When I view the Properties of the Folder, it says it is 485MB.

My iPad 3 says it has 11GB stored on it, and the app I am most concerned about backing up (Download) has 7GB on that one app alone.

So my four questions are:

1) Did all of my 11GB truly transfer?

2) If so, why is the size of the Folder only 485MB?

3) When I look for the largest size File within the Back up Folder, the largest is 47,976 KB. So which one is the 7GB Download app?

4) Can the content of each File be viewed on my PC, or is the content only viewable on a iPad?

Thanks!

Not all content is included in a backup - the contents of the Music and Videos aren't included (they should be in your computer's iTunes library anyway), photos that were synced from a computer aren't included, and nor are the actual apps (again they should be in your iTunes library), just their content and settings.

This page lists what is included in a backup : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946

And no, you can't view the backup files on your computer, the backup will need to be restored onto an iOS device.

King_Penguin,

1) When you say "the contents of the Music and Videos aren't included (they should be in your computer's iTunes library anyway)", do you mean they transferred to my PC's iTunes when I just made the backup?

Please note that the PC is my sons computer, and I never use his computer/iTunes for anything except for the backup I just did.

2) When you say "nor are the actual apps (again they should be in your iTunes library), just their content and settings", do you mean they transferred as well when I just made my backup?

Thanks for helping?

1, no, you can copy iTunes purchases from the iPad to your computer's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. Music (and videos) from other sources (e.g. copied from CDs or bought from other sites) will not be copied back from a device - you can either copy them over the computer that you originally synced them from, from your own backup of your content, or there are third-party computer programs which can copy them from a device (some are listed half-way down this page).

2, no, again you can copy them over via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases

1. No Apps, music, movies, books, photos (except for the camera roll) are not stored in the backup. Those items are synced from iTunes. The backup contains only app data, documents, device settings, preferences, etc. - no media at all.

2. See answer above

3. Again - see number 1.

4. No

This is what iTunes backs up.

iTunes: About iOS backups

There are two primary ways to save purchased content from iTunes and the App Stores. You can use iCloud as your only "storage" and backup or you can use iTunes - or you can use both if you want to do so. I use both, but I rely on iTunes on my MacBook Pro as my primary way of storing and saving my purchases.

No matter which method that you choose - you do not actually backup apps, music, movies, etc. because if you use iCloud only, they can be downloaded again at no charge as long as you use the same Apple ID that you bought them with. If you sync with iTunes, they are stored in your iTunes library on your computer.

No matter what happens - you can always download most purchased content again. Not all content is available in all countries for iTunes in the cloud downloads.

This explains how downloading past purchases works. Read it thoroughly and read the article that I have linked below this one as well.

Downloading past purchases from the App Store ...

content types are supported for iTunes in the Cloud by country, as well as where iTunes Match is available

Backups contain the "stuff" that your apps created ... documents, photos that you take with the iPad or save from emails and websites, Safari History and bookmarks, your iPad settings, Notes, calendar entries, text messages... those types of things.

Demo,

You have referred to the two ways to save purchased content from iTunes and the APP Store.

I totally understand how that works with apps I did purchase from the APP Store (such as SetLists, Tempo, RevChordPro, Tempo, etc).

But the videos that are of utmost importance to me were not purchased, they were downloaded for free from various websites.

To download the videos and have them viewable on my iPad 3, I had to purchase the app called Download.

That app would let me download the videos and save them in a Folder within the Download app.

So how do I backup/save those videos for eventually putting them back on another iPad that I will purchase one day?

As an aside, I am purchasing a MacBook Pro this week, if that makes ant difference on what I'm trying to accomplish.

I don't see an app specifically called "download" in the App Store. Is the name of the app "iDownloader Pro - Downloads and Download Manager" perhaps? If that is the app. You can use file sharing with iTunes to save the videos to the new MacBook Pro. Many of the apps that issue that are Download apps use file sharing.

If that's not the name of the app, post back with the exact name of the app. I reread your first post and see that you did reference "Download App" but I don't see it in the U.S. App Store. Are you in the U.S.?

You can read this about using file sharing in the meantime and maybe this will help. Besides, you should have some instructions/documentation in the app that explains how to do this if file transfer is offered in the app.

iOS: About File Sharing

File sharing is not part of backing up nor does it take place automatically when you sync with iTunes, but you do use file sharing when you sync with iTunes. Many apps support file sharing for the transfer of files from the iPad to your computer.

If your app supports file sharing you can move the videos to the computer and then back to the new iPad when you are ready to do so.

That is the app that I asked about in my last post. Read the app description on the app developer website. It says that it supports USB file transfer and file sharing with iTunes. You should be able to use one of those methods to get the videos onto the computer.

You can also export videos to the camera roll and then import them onto the computer.

iOS: Importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your ...

One of these methods has to work for you.

Demo,

Thank you so much!!

Three last questions:

1) So obviously the reason the size of my initial backup was so small was because I never transferred those 7GB worth of video files?

2) Will I be able to view the transferred videos on the PC?

3) I just counted the number of videos I have, and there are 107 videos, with an average size of around 70MB.

So would you File Transfer or export the videos to the camera roll and then import them onto the computer?

Thanks!

1. Yes, that is why. The videos did not transfer via the backup as they shouldnt have, so that is why the backup that you see is only 485MB.

2. I don't see why you will not be able to watch them on the computer. If the videos can be viewed on the iPad they should be viewable on the computer. Without knowing what format they are in .... but knowing that the iPad is a little "fussier" as to what are acceptable out of the box video formats .... they should play on your computer.

3. Honestly, I have no experience importing videos from the camera roll. I have imported photos a number of times, but with Photo Stream that is even easier to do now on a Mac. I would be inclined to try importing them with iPhoto or USB and see how that goes, and you can always use file sharing if it does not move fast enough for you.

With file sharing you can save the videos to the hard drive from iTunes and if you import them, you can save them via iPhoto on the Mac.

If you have any specific questions about the app and you can't find the answers, the developers offer support via email here.

Hi guys🙂

I need your help again.

As discussed earlier in my Post, I sold my iPad 3 and backed it up to my Windows 7 HP Computer.

Well, I couldn't live without and iPad anymore, so I just purchased a iPad 4.

I'm setting it up now, and it's asking if I want to:

1) Set Up as new iPad.

2) Restore from iTunes Backup.

Obviously I want to Restore from iTunes Backup, but that's where I'm having a problem.

The HP I backed up to has been acting weird when I try to coonect to the Internet, so I've disconnected the Internet/Ethernet Cable from the PC.

I can see all my backup files on the PC by going to:

\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

When I connect the iPad to the PC, nothing happens.

When I try to open iTunes on the PC, I get a message that says files are missing and I need to reinstall iTunes.

So what can/do I do, and can iTunes be reinstalled without connecting to the Internet?

Thanks!
