Sometimes the keyboard will not come up when I tap on a text field. I'm not sure whether this coincides with accidentally/unknowingly touching the "hide keyboard" key or not. In any case, how do I make the keyboard reappear?

The keyboard should always pop up when you tap in a text field. If you use a Bluetooth keyboard and have it turned on - and have Bluetooth turned on in the iPad settings, that will prevent the virtual keyboard from popping up. If you do not use a Bluetooth keyboard, try this.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

Thank you. This is an intermittent problem. Just now I went in (without rebooting and with my Logitech keyboard nearby but turned off) and the iPad keyboard popped up when needed. I checked in settings, and Bluetooth was turned on the whole time.
In any case, what is the cure for hitting the "hide keyboard" key? Rebooting?
I still think that the keyboard could be the cause of this. I don't know for sure, but I was working with another user some months ago that discovered that a Bluetooth game that his kids were playing - with the gaming console down stairs from his iPad - was wreaking havoc with his keyboard not popping up. When he turned Bluetooth off on the iPad, it resolved his issue.
But in any case, try rebooting and see what happens. It hurts nothing, causes no loss of data and it resets the system so its worth a shot.
