How do I use photo stream?

How do I use photo stream? The instructions on the Apple site http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4362 are not full enough to get this to work.

I have shared from iTunes, it says there are 77 items. But the Apple TV says there are 0 items.

iPhoto, which I don't use, wants to set up an iCloud something or other, which I also don't use, and iCloud isn't in the instructions about sharing images to the Apple TV.
