I've been experiencing this for a couple of days now. Not only does it prevent me renting movies, but I also cannot install software updates because the AppleTV can't authenticate with the server.
Me too, I'm in the Chicago area and haven't been able to connect for 3 days now. Netflix works though.
Rreset Apple TV. Go to General. Select Reset. This should solve problem.

This just happened to me. I tried everything including resetting the device to factory settings. It has been down for a week or so saying cannot connect to server. Because of this I am unable to use it for anything. Anyone else have ideas?
I am having the same "Apple TV cannot connect to the iTunes Store" problem. I have tried a reset and a restor, and no luck. I have two Apple TVs which have worked perfectly for years, and all of the sudden I am having these problems. One of them will connect to my wireless network, but says it cannot access the internet. I have numerous devices using the wireless network, including the computer on which I'm sending this message, and am just confounded by this.
Try pulling power plug to reset.
