Why does snap chat turn black everytime I open it?

When I open snap chat, my phone's camera does not work. It basically turns black. P.S. I recently purchased an iPhone 5 so I'm assuming it should not have a problem.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)
