on DVD, UDF disc does not play

I recorded a tv show on a DVD recorder at my hi-fi system. It is beautiful there. It plays well there.
I took the CD to my computer. It shows up as a read only folder called Sonata_volume, and there is nothing in the folder. Getting info on it shows that it is formatted UDF, with 4.3 GB used.
How can I get this to play on my computer?

iMac G5, TiBook, G4 MP 500; G3 beige 333, iMac 333, others, Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I am using OS X 10.4.6, Quicktime 7.1, iMac PPC G5, Toast Titanium 7.02

My DVD recorder is a Sony. I recorded to a DVD-R, (S mode that gives 2 hrs recording time on the disk,) and finalized the disc.
It has 2 shows recorded on it. The first one, I set the timer for 1 hour, and it recorded and set up auto chapters at every 5 minutes. I set it up to record for only 1 hour, but then it continued for a second hour (this is another problem to be solved) and there are no chapters in that hour.

According to <http://forums.support.roxio.com/lofiversion/index.php/t5061.html> :

"The way to import the video into Toast is to insert the DVD in the disc drive, choose the Toast Video window and select DVD video and then click on the Media button to enter the Media Browser. In the Media Browser choose DVD with the top button. Your DVD should show up in the lower window. Now go down one level with the lower button to get your video Titles to appear. Select the titles and drag them to the Video window. The MPEG video gets extracted from the DVD and written to the Roxio Converted Items folder. Now you are ready to author convert the video by selecting it and clicking the Export button.
Note: When you quit Toast the Converted Items folder is automatically emptied unless you change that in Toast preferences."

When I use Toast Titanium 7.02, I can get to the disk as outlined above. i see it as SONATA_VOLUME:DVD-Video. I can also see the individual chapters. But each one is locked, and I cannot drag anything into the Toast window. It says "One file is protected" and thus I cannot view the DVD on the Mac.

Your links are really helpful.
I read some of it and tried the sudo in terminal.
But it still did not work for me.

After I typed "sudo open /Volumes/SONATA VOLUME/VIDEOTS" it asked for my password. So I gave the password, and then I got:
"We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System
Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:

#1) Respect the privacy of others.
#2) Think before you type.
#3) With great power comes great responsibility."

Then a finder window opened, with the sonata volume showing, but still no visible files.

Since my recorder is a sony rdr-vx500, I would like to find specific info on that. I have tried some searches there, but get too many non-relevant results.
What would you search for?

I just had an online session with sony.
He said:
All dvd players support closed index (finalized) disc.
The Mac supports playback of DVD discs of open index disc.
Please contact the Macintosh support for assistance in this regard.

so I asked:
are you saying if i do not finalize, then it will be readable?

he said:
the open index indicates that there is no need to finalize.

I said:
I did not finalize on a CD-RW and it was not readable.

He said:
I suggest that to contact the Macintosh support for assistance in this regard.

I just put a recorded, unfinalized disk in the drive.
The finder does not recognize it. Toast does not either.

have you tried sudo ls -lah /Volumes/SONATAVOLUME/VIDEOTS in Terminal ? ( this also from the ecoustics.com thread )

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210079 suggests that dvd+r disks might work for you, as does at least one user review here

Possibly.... the auto-chapter feature may be the problem - see this page. or maybe the HQ needs to be on, or ???

Amazon customer reviews suggest that the media choice is crucial.

seems that there's an NEC drive inside

Soooo - lots to try ,but frustrating that owners are left to do the trial & error of finding out what works when it shouldn't exactly be a surprise that owners might want to play bcak their recorded dvd's on a computer.

Have fun

I did try sudo ls -lah /Volumes/SONATAVOLUME/VIDEOTS in Terminal.
I did get a list of files with permissions listed. But it is still not playable.
I also tried sudo open /Volumes/SONATAVOLUME/VIDEOTS, but then nothing shows up except a blank finder window.

I will try the DVD+R disks, but I don't have much hope. From reading in lots of forums, it seems that it will never happen.
