erasing documents - sudo rm -R

I was told that if I paste this code into the Terminal window and drag my trash in there followed by my password, the trash will be permanently deleted and unrecoverable. Is this true please and does it apply to music files, photo files, 'office' files and any other file? I have an i-mac with version 10.7.5

Mac OS X (10.7.2)

No that is not true. It just means remove all files including those that don't belong to you recursively. What you need is a secure erase. Put the files you want securely erased into the trash, select the trash can, go to finder, select secure empty trash

good luck

Thanks for that, may I ask a further question please so that I can give my mac to someone else... If I have deleted photo's by using "move trash" and done "Empty i-Photo Trash" also deleted files using "move to trash" a but not "secure empty trash", how can I be certain all of the photos and files are not recoverable? Is the "Disk Utility" - "Erase free Space - 35 times" the best way to do that?
