Windows cant open ipod

Ok when i plug my ipod into the computer Itunes won't list it windows explorer says its a removable disk instead ok its name and everytime i try to open it windows explorer freezes. When i open ipod updater it wont respond after saying initializing.

dell unfortunatly, Windows XP

If the iPOd operates fine unplugged from the PC, and you see it in windows when you do plug it, try ALL the steps in this artical first http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716

NOTE: When removing/uninstalling iTUnes, you will uninstall quicktime too, and when reinstalling iTUnes disable antivirus and security programs
