Can an Airport Extreme replace the (UK) BT Home Hub 3 router, when used with Bt Infinity ?
If so what do I need to know about setting up the A.E. ?

No, but you might be able to add the AirPort Extreme to the BT Home Hub 3.
FWIW - BT Infinity VDSL (FTTC) uses a separate modem and router in the U.K.
The modem is a Huawei hg612, and the router is a Home Hub 3 - so my question refers to replacement of the HH3 only with an Airport Extreme.
Yes you can replace the home hub with an AE if you had an infinity connection, I have done this.
When configuring the internet on your AE, select the PPPoE option and use the following crentials:
username = 'bthomehub@btbroadband.com'
password = enter anything (e.g. 'password') as this isn't important
So the Airport Extreme then connects to the existing Infinity modem, presumably using the same cable as is currently used by the HG612 to connect to the HomeHub 3.
If you have done this does the AE give out a stronger WiFi signal, and/or is it more reliable, subject to less drop-outs, has faster transmission rates ?
I run the Airport Extreme on BT Infinity instead of the HH3 and I find that it is more stable, no dropouts of the BB connection.
You use the same cable to connect between the modem and the Airport.
I have a printer connected to the USB port on the airport and that is used by the four computers on the network.
The biggest advantage for me though is that the Airport is dual band, 2.4GHz is very crowded here so the 5GHz band is used to connect the iPads and the MacBook PRO all the other stuff uses 2.4GHz the difference in speed for me between the two bands is like night and day. On 2.4 GHz I can see over 35 networks but on 5GHz there is just me and a neighbour.
The HH3 sits in a box under the bench just incase I ever have problems. I don't expect to use it again.
