i have been studying abroad in ireland for a month now with my iphone on airplane mode so i do not receive charges and my imessaging and facetime have both stopped working recently even when i have wifi

Is it still in airplane mode ? If yes, then turn wifi back on.
Instead of using airplane mode so you don't get data charges, try going to Settings>general>Mobile data and turn that off
at&t told me to use airplane mode my entire stay and to just have wifi on at the same time which I have been and only after an entire month here did it stop working. So I'm not sure what that means.
Assuming you have not already tried
Reset
Hold home/sleep buttons until Apple logo appears
ignore off slider
I would take out of airplane mode also and just disable Cellular Data AND Data Roaming under Settings - General - Cellular.
This way you would still be able to receive texts, your phone # will register to the network and you will still be able to connect to wifi. I traveled to Ireland last year and this worked fine for me.
