I've turned off zoom, but all my windows are opening so large that I've had to relocate the dock to the side because I cannot get to the "close" button. What monster did this to me? Mountain Lion 10.8.3?
OSX seems bent on limiting us to what iOS devices can do.
Not on 10.8 at the moment to check, but go up to the top of the screen & see if there are choices, or is it a little double ended diagonal arrow icon to get out of Full Screen mode???

Screen resolution?
Go to Apple Menu / System Preferences / Displays.
Change the resolution. Whatever numbers are shown, e.g. 1280 x 960, select a larger one. You can keep changing this till you find the resolution that suits you.
