hi, I am from Puerto rico, US. i purchased a new iphone 4S from claro carrier from Puerto rico and taking to india as a gift. which is the better way to unlock iphone 4s. india or Puerto rico (US) as per cost and safety vice to avoid unnecessary hacking.

The only LEGAL way to unlock it is by asking the carrier to do it.

Only Claro can officially unlock that iPhone if it is locked to them. Any other service that claims to be able to unlock it will be hacking the iPhone or illegally hacking Claro's database. From Apple's information, Claro does not offer unlocking, but contact them and ask as Apple's data isn't always current.

Two points to be considered.

1. Unlocking of iPhone. As per info posted in Apple Support Doc, Last Modified: Mar 25, 2013

Claro, Peurto Rico do not offer unlocking service. As already said above ^^ only the Carrier unlocks iPhones as per their unlocking policy.

2. You have already purchased the iPhone! Needs to be remembered that warrantee service can be availed only in the country of purchase, except EU where it can be availed in any country.

Hey man, no way to the factory unlock. Claro not going to do that, Apple not going to help you that too. Apple always ask you to contact the original carrier. Carrier will say we don't do that. U and me stuck. Just use temp soluctions only for now.Some time i feel take a hammer and break it, then we don't feel pain everyday. just for that day.

In that case then, you really need to think very carefully before you purchase a phone in another country that will not be used in the country of origin - so purchase in the US for use in India. Also, if you want to use the phone in another country, it is always best to purchase an unlocked phone directly from Apple so it can be used anywhere and with any sim.

If you are buying it locked from a carrier, then you need to check first whether they do in fact offer unlocking - lots of carriers do, but some don't, such as carriers in Japan and Claro, as you have found to your cost.

Buyer beware and think before you buy rather than just jumping in feet first and then finding that you can't get your phone unlocked for use in another country and that you have no valid warranty for that country either because iPhone warranty is not international!!
