Q: will Tmobile LTE patch disable 3g?

i live in kind of a raty area, so i dont know if the update will actully give me LTE. if the patch strips 3g from my phone then i dont think i can use it.

    Why would it strip 3G from the phone?  That doesn't even make sense.

    the fact that it doesnt make sense is why i ask.

    i read several articles that suggested that the LTE function would actually replace the 3g function.

    Don't ask me why that might be the case, because i dont know.

     

    this question is directed toward GSM iphone 5 users on the tmobile network; specifically, users who have updated their carrier settings or have other factual information.

    i think i understood the articals, but doubt them. becuse they clearly state that the update would leave my phone running on EDGE networking when not in LTE coverage.

    my issue with them is they dont state wither they are assumption or news.

     

    are you useing the unlocked iphone 5 on tmobile network?

    My understanding is that the frequencies T-Mobile uses for 3G in most areas still aren't supported by the iPhone 5 (and never will be since it's a hardware limitation), so if LTE isn't available, EDGE will be the only option. But might I suggest you just contact T-Mobile and ask them? Then you will have the official information.

    you know what im talking about, there dosnt see to be any way to veryfy which hardware is which. i bought this phone a month ago but the idea of living with EDGE scared me.

     

    i did update the phone and i do get "4G", i guess i just have the roam to know for sure which model i have.

    If you want a phone that will work fully with the T-Mobile network in the US, you will have to wait and  buy a new on starting on 4/12.

    The model doesn't matter. None of the iPhones, of any model including the iPhone 5, support the 1700 / 2100 MHz frequencies T-Mobile uses for 3G in most of the US. They've reportedly started supporting 1900 Mhz, one of the GSM frequencies the iPhones do support, in a few areas for GSM as well as LTE, but apparently not many.

    I would still recommend that you confirm with T-Mobile. All this is completely new, and there may be caveats, hitches and just plain goofs.

    Since what I use with T-Mobile is an iPhone 4S, I don't think it would be valid for comparison to the iPhone 5, but I had been using T-Mobile 3G these past few months without any major problem until today when I was asked by the iPhone if I wanted to update the carrier settings.  I then updated from T-Mobile 14.0 to T-Mobile 14.1 and powered off and back on.

     

    What I know see is 4G instead of 3G and under Settings>General>Cellular the toggle has changed from Enable 3G to Enable 4G.  I haven't yet used the 4G intensively enough because I am at home on WiFI but after trying it out for a bit, I do think it is faster than 3G was, so for now I am a happy T-Mobile customer.  We shall see when I am out and about tomorrow morning.

     

    I also now have Visual Voicemail which I did not have before.

     

    It would be great if some iPhone 5 users could report their findings.
