Ipod touch 4th generation

I have an Ipod touch 4th generation, and I'm trying to download some apps on it and i keep getting this message that I have to update to ios 5. I have looked on line for this update and it tells me to update thru itunes well tried that it didn't work no updates for the ios 5 so then tried thru my ipod touch which has a 4.2 something on it and under settings general there is no update button so can't do it that way. Is there any way to update this ipod to ios 5?

What version of iTunes is on your syncing computer?

What is the computer Operating System?

Check which Model you have actually have... it sounds like yours could be a 2nd Gen... If so, iOS 4.2.1 is as far as it can go.

64 bit operation system and the next to new itunes, the new one is a 11 something I tried to download it and I couldn't get it to download.

In that case, check the link from AnaMusic above to be certain you have a 4th generation.

Try:

Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime for Windows

If your iPod has cameras it is a 4G.

If a 4G you need iTunes 10.7 or later.

Nope. For a 4G you need iTunes 10.6.3. When i first bought my iPod i tried connecting and iTunes told me that i need 10.6.3. (I had 10.6.0 at this time)

If you have a Mac with OSX 10.5.8 it will work with iTunes 10.6.3 but you can't update with 10.6.3.
