What I want to do is make a list that I can check off and then restore the whole list.
To be clear, I have 12 tasks to do when leaving for a trip - I check them off as I complete them and then I want the same list back when I need to go on another trip.
I can see that you can scroll through completed tasks but that is pretty kludgy for this.
Any better ideas?

Maybe try creating a note in the Note app, then copy it over to Reminders when you need it?

I used to use zenbe lists and they (like many grocery list apps) would let you restore your list right in the app.
I really need something that does that but I'd also very much like to stick with reminders and not have a bunch of different apps all over my phone and macs
I don't know how to do it in iOS but you can do it in Mountain Lion and that will sync back. Go to Completed in the sidebar. Select the items you want to uncheck (shift-click or cmd-click). Drag the items to the original list (or any list). They will become unchecked.
Thanks for the suggestions. I finally found a replacement for Zenby WunderLIsts - it is available for ios and mac and sync to each other. For the lists I want to have permanently, i make wunderlists, for my ongoing todo list, I use reminders (great to be able to add to it with siri) and all is well now. Appreciate your ideas.

I used Automator which has a "Create New Reminder" function; to create an application that populates my checklist every morning. It works pretty well.
