Why does my Apple USB SuperDrive rejects CDs?

I have an iMac 21.5 late 2012 desktop. Since this iMac does not have an optical drive, I bought the Apple USB SuperDrive in order to transfer my CD collection to my music library. For some reason the (not so) SuperDrive does not play the CDs. It does, however, play DVDs. I checked the compatability with this iMac and it says its compatible. There are no instructions or alerts in the SuperDrive box that indicates doing anything special to make this work. Has anyone else had this problem?
