What a mistake it was to upgrade to Mountain Lion.

So many little irritations that I will not go into them all. I sure wasn't aware that I would loose all of my mailboxes. I used them to store emails related to a given subject that I wanted to keep. I suppose I was naieve to think they were safe there. Can't retrieve anything because- again I was unaware that Time Machine would be erased and start new from the moment of installing Mountain Lion.

A couple of little irritations. 1. Can't get the mouse to work right. Really tough to highlite and almost impossible to grab and move a window without it immediately dissappearing into the dock - usually takes several tries just to grab and move a window. I have made many changes to the mouse in Preferences with only slight improvement. Other things seem like ML goes backwards. For example with SL the contents of a folder could be resized by a simple slider at the bottome of the window. Now I have to go to preferences and resize if I want to enlarge or shrink. What a genious move that was. Also the same folder in SL would show you how many items were in the folder. ML gives no info. There is more but suffice it to say IMO it is a lousy upgrade.

None of those problems are a result of Mountain Lion. Time Machine doesn't erase your backups. I don't know what you did, so I can't explain why you can't just go back in time and restore. If you erased your hard drive prior to upgrading, then it should have offered to migrate everything over from a TM backup during the startup assistant. If you just upgraded normally, nothing should have been lost.

The icon size slider is still there, in the status bar which can be enabled in the same way it could in Snow Leopard.

I only installed ML as directed. At first I didn't notice that my mailboxes were gone. Once I noticed I immediately went to Time Machine and much to my surprise I found the moment ML was installed -ACCORDING TO DIRECTIONS- Everything on Time Machine was gone. Now the only thing on TM is what has occured since ML was installed.

All of the many irritating things I mentioned only arrived with ML. Incidently there is no icon size slider bar in the status bar on my computer. Maybe I just don't know how to enable it. In SL it was always there - I don't remember ever doing anything to enable it.

To loose all those mailboxes creates a real problem for me. I am becoming more and more disalousioned with Apple and will probably switch before enduring any more "upgrades".

Boot OS X Recovery and restore your Snow Leopard system from your Time Machine backup. That's what it's there for. You can also boot from the Time Machine backup volume using Startup Manager. It will load OS X Recovery as well.

I have performed numerous backups and reversions on several different systems. Using Time Machine, I can revert to Snow Leopard or Lion at will. No backups were ever erased, nor have I experienced any of the other problems you described.

Something else is going on. If previously installed third party anti-virus or other utilities turned out to be incompatible with ML, anything is possible.

Hmm, never lost anything on my five Macs when I updated and the slider is where it has always been. No seem to hate ML which is your opinion and your choice, so you can reinstall SL or sell your Mac and buy a Windoze setup. That is why we have freedom of choice. Some of us prefer to troubleshoot what may have gone wrong or ask questions without throwing stones from the start, so whatever suits your needs. It will not effect anyone here.

Cheers

Didn't intend to throw stones at anybody - just frustrated. Don't know what is going on because all of a sudden TM decided to go back a little further - to January. I can get the old mail program but can't open it because it is an older version that was on SL and ML says it can't open that version. The frustration continues.

I have been an apple user since the first machine came out and have never before this last year or two had a single problem. Maybe Apple is becoming too centered on iphones, etc..

I believe I may take your advise and go back to SL.

Hi Douglas, if I may....

Going back to SL might not get you back to where you want to be if th einfo has trusly been deleted.

I'd say this, list out your problems as separate points giving us a clear idea of what's up, (remember we interpret things differently and are not looking at your screen). We'll then see if we can help.

Before you start if you choose to do so, use SuperDuper or CarbonCopyCloner to make a clone of your system on a separate drive, (it's always good two have two backups using separate methods).

Something along the lines of;

1. My mailboxes are gone. I have opened mail and found.........

2. Can't get the mouse to work right. Really tough to highlite and almost impossible to grab and move a window without it immediately dissappearing into the dock. I've been at System prefs.......

You get the idea. By the way exaclty what changes did you make in System Prefs?

Show or hide the status bar has been an option in the Finder "View" menu for a very long time. You may have forgotten that it is there. Enable it from that menu & you should see the window item count & available space on the HD, just as with Snow Leopard. And if you are in Finder's Icon view, you should also see the icon size slider, just as with Snow Leopard.

In fact, showing/hiding the status bar now has a keyboard shortcut that it did not in Snow Leopard: press command & the forward slash ("/") key to toggle it on & off.

Hi Douglas, I felt that way too,it does get better. I googled the emix [ isn't that the mail name used before ML?] and how to import and batch change them to a normal Apple email message format, I have forgotton the name but in the end the solution offerd worked like a charm-sorry I didn't save that info, but googling it will bring up this forum and several others and in one I found the simple fix that batch changed[the entire mailbox was changed in one batch] it may have been in the SL forum-persevere, luctor et emergo.

I just tried what R-C-R recommended above andit all works, even the little slider in icon view. The Safari downloads are now in my ML installation shown by clicking at the very top right of the Safari window-there is a very small square with a circle in it and in the circle is an arrow pointing down, that shows all the downloads. I actually switched to Chrome because I could no longer get into my account and Chrome IMHO is great, well worth trying[small learning curve] and of course the constant babbling about log in!!! you may be missing something-yeah, my next migrain.

I just googled 'emix mail Mac' and was taken to the exact page for restoring the silly changs to Mail messages, I remember he gave very complicated instructions but when I had done the first step the old mailboxes were all restored and in a format one can read and wwrite in.

gumsie -- As of now my mail problem is this --- Apparently when I installed ML it also installed Mail 6.3. While using SL the Mail was v 4.6. I am assuming that the mailboxes I no longer have are in Mail 4.6. I have been able to retrieve Mail 4.6 but ML can not open that version so I have to find a way to open it before I know if I still have the mailboxes.

RC-R --- The command forward ("/") key solved that problem. Thanks.

putnik --- Still working on the mouse thing but not having much luck. Maybe not related but another problem I have is when viewing mail I have a hard time getting out of mail. It is relly difficult to get the menu to show so I can close out. Also have a difficult time getting the dock to show so i could get out that way.

Eric --- TM FAQ. Good info - thanks

Here are my Dock settings. I use a hidden Dock on the left of the screen, but suit yourself. Note that when sliding the pointer to the side to open the dock, there is a need to move it slightly up or down, before the dock appears. I think this is to prevent inadvertent opening of apps.

Edit: I was going to offer advice on the mail issue, but others will be better qualified to help in this. The Mail Help menu may be useful too.

Apr 12, 2013 10:16 AM in response to Douglas Amsbury

I had the same problem with Mail 6.3 when I "upgraded" to ML last month. All my mailboxes had dissappeard, and I paniced (lots of importatnt stuff was in them).

But... I found them by accident. If you roll your pointer over "ON MY MAC" in the sidebar, the word "Show" appears to the right. Click on "Show" and your mailboxes should display as before.

Just yet another stupid and unnecessary irritant with ML... The button to reveal important information is hidden.

Apr 12, 2013 5:39 PM in response to RGMeyer

Hi RG,

Coincidently I too just discovered the same thing. What a relief to find the mail boxes. I am still strugling with other irritants but am discovering that most problems are because I can't figure out how to correct them. ML does an excellent job of making it difficult to find answers. While I am no expert I also am not a complete beginer but this OS is full of little irritants that seem hard to correct. For example -- When scanning through my mail I normall highlite those messages that I will not open. When I then click to send them to the trash something strange happens. About 80% of the time the highlited messages go to the trash along with one or two that are not highlighted and when I notice it I have to go to the trash and find them. It is not so bad now because I am aware of it but at first I didn't realize what it was doing until some time had passed. It normaly doesn't do this when deleting just one email - it is when I do batches. I have a lot of email.

What a mistake it was to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
