restore itunes library using .tmp file

I went onto my itunes and everything is gone... all my podcasts, music and playlists. I went onto the forum and people recommened several ways to restore your library but nothing seems to work. I found the largest .tmp file and have tried renaming it as "iTunes Library.itl" and starting up my iTunes an that doesn't work. Can someone please help!!! I would hate having to upload all my music again!!! 😟

See this post.

The largest .tmp file may not be the file you need. My library files are (smallest to largest) iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library.xml and iTunes Library Genius.itdb. Each of those files may get a temporary copy when updated. The .tmp file you need to use is one of a similar size to the .itl files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder and dated the last time your library worked properly. If you can't find one that works the use a .itl file from the Previous iTunes Libraries folder instead. You'll lose recently added playlists and playback stats but at least it should work.

I've tried doing what you said in your previous post but sadly it's not working, when i rename the .tmp file to iTunes Library.itl and run my iTunes, none of my music appears and all it suggest is me finding scanning for my media, etc.

I tried using the .tmp file that is similar size to my previous libraries and it didn't work. would it be an issue that I have several .tmp files...around 50? (iT50, iT49, etc) should i delete them? and all that really happens when i run my iTunes after naming the .tmp file "iTunes Library" is that it created another "iTunes Library" file that is smaller in comparison to the .tmp file I created.

Start by getting rid of AVG then... This is most likely what causes the .tmp files to be left behind and the library lost.

Your best bet is likely to be with the older .tmp files (lower number) rather than more recent ones, unless they are dated before your most recent file in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. Have you had any success with copying in a file from there? These should definitely be in the correct format and complete versions of the library file so should work right away.

Much as you may not want to get rid of AVG there is growing evidence that it is responsible. You are unlikely to have any permanent luck until you get rid of it. I realise that your previous library files are likely to be somewhat out of date, but they are better than nothing and it is easy enough to add the media folder to the library to import any recently additions. However there is not much point if the library is just going to be eradicated again. I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials as a replacement for AVG.

If there are recent rating & playback stats that you want to bring in form an iPod or iOS device my script SyncStats might help.
