Since 10.8.3 update I can seldom send email from my main email address. Once in a while it will go but I usually have to choose a different server than my preferred one where I get all my email. I have tried changing tons of things and continue to have the problem. No problem with getting mail.

I typed in the wrong version I was on under my signature. I am using 10.8.3 which is the update that caused the problem....so the discussion on updating to 10.6 wasn't relevant.

I would like to say I have been speaking to apple about this for the last couple of weeks, I too cant get this to work.
i spent 2 hours on the phone to apple support last week and currently on the phone to them again after spending a good 5 hours on the phone and email with my email supplier. I am using IMAP

it is only right i mention i have just spent over an hour on the phone and finally sorted this out although in total it been just under 10 hours.
First i had to
add the google DNS addresses of 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 to your network preferences.
then
Then in System Preferences > Sharing the Mac had no name, so we gave it a name and then afterwards a Host Name.

Your issue had nothing to do with your iMac, DNS setting are set by default by your ISP. Therefore Apple solved an issue with your ISP. Glad you got it figured out though.
