My MacBook Air will not show up on my Sony HD tv

I have purchased the mini display VGA adapter for my macbook.

As i plug it into my sony tv i push the input button for the tv bringing up the list of inputs.

However the PC option is not hilighted as if there was nothing connected.

Any suggestions?
