iTunes does not recognize HE-AAC (AAC-LC + SBR)

I have a bunch of songs that have been ripped into 64kbps HE-AAC. This is a great format for lots of storage on my phone and whatnot and I do not want to store these songs in a second format. iTunes 11.0.2 does not correctly recognize the High Efficiency profile and plays a very distorted version of the song. I can play the same song in VLC and it is fine. I know that iTunes 9 was the first version to support HE-AAC, so it should still work. I am including images from both VLC and iTunes showing the details of the codec used. I should note that I think this could be a codec ordering issue because there was one time when iTunes recognized all of the songs as HE-AAC, but that changed back after a reboot. Perhaps it is finding the first codec that works instead of the best codec that works.
