Can't open Quartz Composer on new updated OS 10.8.3

Hello,

After upgrading yesterday from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion OS 10.8.3 on MacMini early 2009, I today downloaded correspondent new XCode app from Apple Store to my Application folder.

Tried to open old Quartz Composer.

No way. Error Message:

//

An exception was raised:
+[QCImageManager registerImageBufferConverterClass:priority:]: "BackdropsImageBufferConverter" is already registered
//

Then I found Ralph Johns's post on archived thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2373658:

"If the timings went Snow Leopard Install then 10.6.2 update the Developers Tools I would try running the COMBO version of the OS Update over what you have.

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosxv1062updatecomb o.html"

So, I downloaded OSXUpdCombo10.8.3.dmg and installed that update.

Then deleted all items from my Developer folder and downloaded new Quartz Composer app, through xcode46graphicstools6938140a.dmg and tried to open it.

-> Same error message.

What can I do? 😢
Thank you for helping,

Michel

Thank you Frank, for answering.
Thank you too Ralph for your cooperation.

@ Frank: yes that is the link I used, which allows you to download the XCode Graphic Tools dmg package I mentioned.

In other words:

OS, XCode and Quartz Composer seem to be the latest versions of each.

Downloading XCode, then trying to open QC were the very 1st things I did after updating OS from 10.6.8 to 10.8.3.

With 10.8.3 (Mountain Lion), the downloaded XCode app (3,43 Go) was installed by Apple Store into the Applications folder, not into the Developer folder, as it was with 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)

I tried then to open my primary 4.0 version of QC and got that mentioned Error message and thought: "Uh uh, that hasn't been automatically updated! 😕 "

So I made my Developer folder empty, and, on https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action, downloaded the latest XCode Graphic Tools folder (99,3 Mo): XCode Graphic Tools for XCode - January 2013

That is what I meant, writing:

> Then deleted all items from my Developer folder and downloaded new Quartz Composer app, through xcode46graphicstools6938140a.dmg and tried to open it.

Quartz Composer version is there: 4.6

I didn't found any information ("Read me"), about where to place it (Apps' or Dev' folder), however it seems that all apps open fine,

only not QC, with, again, that mentioned Error Message.

Apr 10, 2013 8:03 AM in response to MichelNimes

I have QC 4.6 (the version in that link) running on 10.8.3 with no problems.

Make sure you are really running the version you downloaded and not an older version. I know when I upgraded to Lion from 10.6 I had a lot of developer stuff all over the place that was getting in the way until I tracked it all down and removed it.

What version of Xcode are you running? I'd do a software update to make sure you have the latest Xcode also, Xcode is at 4.6.1 now.

Apr 10, 2013 12:07 PM in response to MichelNimes

Hi MichelNimes,

It seems Frank has a much more current handle on this that I do.

Michel had emailed me after he discovered the iSight Community but Archived post.

As Frank has also alluded to Quartz Composer can have issues if the components get mixed up.

In the older thread it appeared to happen if you Installed an Update to the OS and then Installed Developers Tools which would appear to have older Quartz Components.

Updating with a COMBO Install seems to have sorted it back then.

My own version is currently at Version 4.5 and stores it in the Developers Folders at the top level of the Hard Drive.

If I use the Apple Store is does not indicate that there is an update for the Developers items.

Thanks Frank, thanks Ralph,

OK. So, today:

- I removed from my computer anything named Xcode, Quartz Composer, Graphic Tools or xxx.qtz, emptied my Developer folder,

- I downloaded a new OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.3 (Combo) from support.apple.com/kb/DL1640 and installed it,

- I downloaded a new Xcode 4.6.1 from Apple Store to my Applications folder

- I downloaded a new Graphic Tools for Xcode - January, 13, from https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action# to my Applications folder,

On that brand new, updated and innocent configuration, I tried again to open Quartz Composer, and got that same ****** "Internal Error" message:

Not being a specialist, I suspect there would be here some conflict beetween Quartz Composer and OS 10.8.3.

I have seen here some other similar problems, such there: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3202206?start=0&tstart=0

What is to be done?

Wasn't there an actual crash report?

Open the Console app, search down the left hand side column until you come to the DiagnosticReports heading, open it and see if there are any crash reports from QC. If so copy and past the first 50 or so lines from it.

OK thats good in a way.

The crash dump seems to be indicating that you are running version

Version: 4.0 (103.1)

and the path seems odd

/Users/USER/Desktop/*/Quartz Composer.app/Contents/MacOS/Quartz Composer

The crash is caused by the inability to find a library

Dyld Error Message:

Library not loaded: @rpath/DevToolsKit.framework/Versions/A/DevToolsKit

Where did you install the latest version of QC? How are you launching it? Again the version in the crash dump does not seem right.

Find QC in the Finder and do a Get Info on it what version is reported

Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - The DevToolsKit.framework is in the Xcode app bundle. You have Xcode installed in the Applications folder?

This is were Apple Store put it

That is the newest I could find on https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action#

Frank Caggiano wrote:

I thought it was logical to install it near Xcode: in a "Graphic Tools" folder, in the Apps folder, rather than in the Developer folder (I can try that).

I launch here by double clicking on the QC app, or on its alias in the Dock.

I'm at a lost. I have to think that you are still somehow pulling up an old version of QC.

I have an old SL partition that I just mounted. It still had the old /Developer folder. In Applications folder in there was a 4.0 version of QC. This is what I get if I run it:

It's the same crash you're getting.

In your crash the path was shown as

/Users/USER/Desktop/*/Quartz Composer.app/Contents/MacOS/Quartz Composer

Is that a valid path on your system? Is there a /Users/USER folder? What's in it?

"Test" is the new User's name you asked me to... test and "Ztock" my perso stuff.
