Why won't my mac open a .mov file?!

I downloaded a video off a file sharing website online and it's extension is .mov. When I look up info, its "kind" is: Quicktime movie. But when I try to open it with quicktime, imovie or iphoto still it says "this file is unreadable" or "unrecognized format".??? Help please!
