Q: why cant i send imessages through my phone number? i can't choose my number as an option to send from

my number is like light grey, and the only option i can choose is to send imessages through my email. I have no idea why it stopped working or how to fix it

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.3

At the time of this post, there seems to be a problem with iMessage and Facetime but only some users are affected.
