iMessage was not working, so I decided to update my phone. When I did, it showed a symbol on the screen to connect to iTunes. When I plugged it into the computer, iTunes tried to restore it bt said it was unable to. Now, my phone is just frozen on that "connect to itunes" image and will not do anything else even if I restart it.

Likely either you or the computer did something to interrupt the update process. Your only option now is to restore. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808.
In the future, update through Wi-Fi to prevent potential problems caused in iTunes.

Your phone is stuck in recovery mode, you are going to have to hold down the home button while you plug it in to itunes and restore through recovery mode.
I followed that link to restore the iPhone, but iTunes says the device isnt eligible for the requested build. So the phone is still stuck on that same screen. 😟
What kinds of security software do you have? This may be blocking it.
I don't know, is there anyway to fix it without using iTunes at all?
Once it is in recovery mode you will need itunes to be able to restore it.

Let me guess: you installed iOS 7 on your phone.

Okay I followed the steps that were given.
