Mail takes 9 minutes to download and says "resuming interrupted append"

Recently I have begun to have problems getting my mail. After I click "get mail" it takes about 9 minutes to download from msn. This is a real problem as when the download is happening the ball spins and I can do little else but wait -- Safari is extremely slow or will not work when the mail is downloading. The phrase that shows up is "resuming interrupted append." I have rebuilt mail and used disc utility to repair permissions. Thank you.

I'm starting to get lost here. What you're describing doesn't make sense to me:

1. If sending worked before, and MSN re-enabled the old account, and you've reverted to the old settings, then it should just work. I have no idea why it doesn't now, amongst other things because I have no way of knowing what your outgoing settings are supposed to be, so I very much doubt I'll be able to help you there. Anyway, what exactly is it that doesn't work? What happens when you try to send a message?

2. As a result of moving INBOX.mbox out of the account folder, your INBOX should have appeared empty in Mail. Only newly downloaded messages should have appeared there. Are you sure you moved INBOX.mbox out of the account folder? Could it be that you copied it instead? Did INBOX.mbox disappear from the account folder when you moved it to the Desktop, or did it remain in the account folder regardless?

Yes, sending did work before. All I changed were the two things I explained before -- user name (msn address) and password. Then I changed them back the way they were. I also had my Werb site person change my main e-mail address to forward to the new msn address and it is still that way although it is in the e-mail address box. Do you think that is the problem? When I send an e-mail it stays in the out box. I used another e-mail address from which to send that is forwarded to the old (and current) msn e-mail address so they match.

It disappeared from the account folder and was only seen on the desktop.

I don't understand what do you mean here.

Do you think that is the problem?

Unfortunately, I have yet no idea what is the problem.

When I send an e-mail it stays in the out box.

And that's it? Doesn't Mail complain about anything when you try to send?

I used another e-mail address from which to send
that is forwarded to the old (and current) msn e-mail
address so they match.

I don't fully understand this either.

Stephanie, could it be just that, because of the previous problems, Mail put your account in the "offline" state, and it remains in that state? This is different from your computer actually being online or not; it's a particular state that can be different for each of your mail accounts.

Do you see a (~) symbol after the name of any of your mailboxes? If so, do Mailbox > Go Online, or click the (~) symbol to bring the account back "online".

In my "e-mail address" box in the Mail general account information, I have two kinds of e-mails addresses. One is my main e-mail address and mail sent to it go from the sender to my Web site's ISP on to msn and then is picked up by Mail. It has always been forwarded by my ISP to the old msn address until yesterday when I had my Web person forward it to the new msn address so all my e-mails to it would not bounce while the account was closed.

I also have other e-mail addresses (e.g., using the domain name of my blog). They are forwarded by GoDaddy. An e-mail to them goes from the sender to the GoDaddy forwarding to msn where Mail picks it up. Yesterday I switched the most popular of those to be forwarded to the new msn address. Now that the old msn account has been reopened, I swtiched the forwarding back to the old msn account.

So my Mail program now has all the same settings it had yesterday as far as I know because the only two things I changed have been changed back. It has the old msn address and password as it had before yesterday's events. In the "e-mail address" box are several e-mail addresses forwarded from GoDaddy to the old msn address so they all match the msn address I have in the "user name" box. Also in the "e-mail address" box is an e-mail address that is still forwarded to the new msn address because I have not asked my Web person to switch it back to the old address.

Mail does not complain about anything. It just throws any mail I try to send over into the Out box and leaves it there.

In the Finder, go to HOME/Library/Mail/. With that folder open, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post, to let me see the structure of your Mail database.

Before actually posting that information, you may edit it so that the file/folder names do not reveal any details you wish to keep private, e.g. you may replace any real username with "username" if you wish; similarly, you may disguise any domain names you don't want to be revealed. Try to be consistent in how you disguise those details, though, as we may need to refer to them in subsequent posts.

Also, if I've understood you correctly, you have a main MSN mail account to handle multiple email addresses using the appropriate forwarding services. All those addresses appear in the Email Address field of Preferences > Accounts > Account Information, separated by commas. Is that correct? If so, you should be able to choose the email address a particular message is being sent from. Do you experience the same sending problems no matter which address are you sending from? In particular, do you also experience sending problems if sending from the same address that is used as the User Name of the account.

Is HTTPMail-Username@msn.com@msn.com the account folder that you moved INBOX.mbox out of it and into the Desktop when following Allan's instructions?

In the Finder, open that folder an repeat the Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), then paste, to let me see whether there is something amiss within your account folder -- you shouldn't need to disguise anything this time.

If this was a POP account, I would say that there are at least three things that have gone awry, and two of them would be directly related with the two problems you have:

1. There should only be an INBOX.mbox folder/package there. The INBOX without .mbox extension, that I presume is a folder, shouldn't be there.

2. The .mbox extension is missing from Drafts, which I presume appears as a folder as well.

3. There shouldn't be an LMA.mbox mailbox there.

Problem is, this is not a standard POP account folder, but rather an account folder managed by a plug-in (HTTPMail) that I'm not familiarized with. Anyone familiarized with that plug-in and reading this thread can shed some light on this?

In the meantime, open the Drafts and the INBOX folders in the Finder, and repeat the procedure to let me see which files/folders are stored in them.

Here are the Drafts contents:

table ofcontents
mbox
content_index
Info.plist

I don't know what they are as when I try to open them I get a message saying I don't have the default application to do so.

And, David, here are the INBOX contents:

Junk E-Mail
Junk E-Mail.mbox
table ofcontents

The table of contents is that same unreadable icon. The Junk E-Mail.mbox is a mailbox icon and the Junk E-Mail is a folder.

Yes, Drafts is a folder. The LMA.mbox is a file I created to keep certain kinds of e-mails in but I don't want or need it anymore.

1. Quit Mail. The following operations up to step 6 should all be done in the Finder without Mail running.

2. Make a backup copy of the HOME/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.

3. Go to the HOME/Library/Mail/HTTPMail-Username@msn.com@msn.com/ account folder.

4. Add the .mbox suffix to the Drafts folder, i.e. it should be Drafts.mbox. This by itself may solve your sending/drafts problems.

5. Move INBOX out of the account folder (e.g. to the Desktop).

6. Launch Mail again and see how it works.

7. In the Finder, go to HOME/Library/Mail/HTTPMail-Username@msn.com@msn.com/ again and repeat the procedure to let me know what files and folders are within the account folder now.

8. If you continue having sending problems, in the Finder go to HOME/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/ and paste here the contents of that folder as well.
